We had a great meal there last night. Highly recommend the fish tacos (haddock or salmon last night), seafood meal of the night and fish & chips. Oysters are always cold (not a given at other places) and tasty. Pizza is very good as well. Top notch beers on tap, including rising tide. When this place is on, like it was last night, it is far and away the best restaurant in the area. You can't beat the setting.

Well we got there at around 6:30 and it took about 20 minutes to get seated which is a somewhat understandable. It seems like they were understaffed which is probably due to the fact that most of them are going back to college and the restaurant will be closing in the coming week. But none the less it took an hour to get our food from a waitress who didn't seem all that happy to be there. I got the fish n' chips which is "famous" from there and they were pretty good but I wouldn't consider them famous. I also tried the fried clams which I thought were better than the fish n' chips. Most of the people there were part of a family. Not much diversity but thats usual fort the area. Waiting there isn't too bad because its a nice scenery but unfortunately the service took too long, it became dark and the mosquitos came out, which is one of the worst parts of Maine. But I still enjoyed myself none the less.

What a beautiful spot. Right on the water. Though today is cold and rainy the view is wonderful. The good and service were both disappointments. The waitress was obviously new and not very friendly. She knew nothing about the menu, specials or prices. My fish and chips were fresh but greasy and soggy. The chips where good and crisp ( how are they that different?) My wife's muscles were good and the portion was good too. Her kale salad was small for the price but had a good lemon dressing. I was shocked to see they charge $4.00 for a basket of rolls! Long drive, fair food and low level of service. I won't return even with the great view.

Awesome location for a waterfront dinner! Had amazing lobster, lobster penne, spicy dirty fries, and oysters! Also had a really fun live bluegrass band at night! Cool selection of beers and wines too! Definitely worth the trip, had a really fun night here!

We noticed a small mouse run by us after dinner. I told the owner and the Husband and Wife said its common because of the door opening to the outside field. Not sure i expected that answer. Food was ok and the Service was interesting.

We have been coming to Pemaquid for 40 years. The contented sole used to be the restoration. As a child I have such fond memories of running up the dock and getting a table and watching the tides come in. Now, I get to watch my kids do it. Ned and Ben took care of us all week and the service was spectacular. The Lobster Club is off the chain!! The wine is great, the blueberry mojito is awesome, the dirty fries are a must!! You have to stop in...you will not be disappointed.

Went there for lunch. It was a beautiful day, and the setting was gorgeous. The food, however, left a lot to be desired. We both ordered Haddock sandwiches. The portions were tiny, salty, and amateurish. My wife sent her food back for a refund. We won't be back anytime soon.

I guess the old saying is true: you can't go home. I just returned from a week in Maine and, having visited the Contented Sole three times while there, I am slightly disillusioned, but still in love. It's like when you realise your partner passes gas. You still love them, but you've been brought to reality. The red hook shrimp I mentioned in my previous review (which I erroneously called rock shrimp) no longer come in Ball jars with lettuce and lemon on the bottom; they now arrive atop butcher paper in a white bowl. Maybe it's the presentation, but they don't seem to taste as wonderful as they did the last time my family was up there. Still, to me, they're the best thing on the menu, which can be problematic, as last year's over fishing has left a small void in the local market. The first visit this year, the six of us (my in-laws, my husband, my stepson, my son, and myself) shared two orders of the shrimp. For entrees, my stepson and I both ordered the lobster club sandwich, which came with slaw and bacon on the sandwich. While it was tasty for what it was, it cemented what I thought when I had my first lobster roll: I don't like stuff with my lobster. Just butter, please. But to each his own. The fries are great, though. The second visit was a date lunch with my husband. My in-laws live two docks over, so we kayaked to and from lunch. We shared an order of the shrimp, my husband ordered the fresh catch sandwich (that day, haddock), and I ordered friend calamari. While my husband loved his sandwich, the batter on my squid was still mostly that...uncooked batter. We were the only patrons there (arriving at their 11:30 am opening), and while our server was nice, she never asked why I didn't eat my entree. More on the service later. For the third and final visit of our trip, I just ordered the shrimp with a side of fries. Major pro: the view. You can't beat it. Watch the boats and boaters. Walk down the dock, Skip rocks. Enjoy the breeze. Listen to the live music, Major con: the service. I don't understand. It's terrible. No one's rude, but they're seemingly forgetful or apathetic. A customer shouldn't have to ask (several times) for silverware, water refills, etc. One visit, they'll have metal buckets with salt and pepper, napkins, ketchup, silverware...and the next, they won't, so good luck getting any of that. My father-in-law even asked where our drink refills were and that surprised me. And not asking why I didn't eat my food? Huh? Look, if not for the location, I doubt I'd spend too much time here, but as it stands, it beats driving all the way to Damariscotta.

Really a disappointment. Been coming here for years, and it's always been hit or miss, but undercooked food and sloppy service is putting this on my list of places to not visit again.

On the dock is a very pleasant place to have an afternoon drink, and the smoked fish appetizer was tasty. But do not have lunch or dinner here. At dinner, steamed mussels were way past their sell-by date and had to be sent back. Fried clams were very strong. Do not order slaw. Fried fish was good. French fries had that stuff on them that makes them crispy, which we like better than regular frozen fries.

I only gave it 3 stars because of the view if you eat outside. Otherwise, it's not worth it as there are so many other great places. Had a Cobb salad, the blue cheese dressing was literally like water. Fried clams were more bread than clams. Disappointed

I have to agree with the other reviewer, why go here? Shaws, pemaquid coop are both better options for seafood. Twin lobsters at Shaws, is less expensive than one lobster here... go to the Co-op and you not only get 2 lobsters, corn, slaw,, roll, PLUS a bowl o steamers.at the lowest price! Salmon was 7 dollars more than Shaws. Service was very good. Food was very good. But it was priced way above market. Fine dining prices, with coop atmosphere.

I wouldn't bother going to this restaurant with so many other great options. We only gave it a try based on a recommendation. Our table had no place settings or salt and pepper and were not given to us until after we had our entrees. We had clam chowder and shrimp cocktail. The chowder, though full of clams, had no flavor. The shrimp were presented well, however were warm. For entrees we ordered steamed clams and a roasted vegetable panini. The panini tasted okay, however it was barely grilled and the cheese was not melted throughout. I had to flag down the waiter to bring broth for me to clean the clams. This is a basic .. No excuse! The clams were on the large size and gritty. I couldn't stomach the thought of eating some of the clams they were so large. Our waiter was pleasant, but that came off as phony by the end of the meal.

Friendly service. Great atmosphere. Specials are tasty and well priced. Delicious wood fired thin crust pizzas.

Great calamari. Perfect. Oysters to die for. But who runs out of steamers In the busy season? You would think they would plan for this. Added a star for delightful service. Took a star for it being Way Overpriced. Nine dollars for a margarita is ridiculous.

We visited The Contented Sole twice on our week long stay in New Harbor. There aren't a lot of restaurants to choose from around the area, and we are not ones to cook on vacation (or anytime!). It was definitely a welcome surprise to learn of this restaurant. This place is tough to find. I'm not even sure how we came to find out about it. (Probably from a local brochure, or something) The entrance is a bit of an odd setup. It almost feels like you're walking into a catering space more than a restaurant. It was a bit awkward walking in because there wasn't a host stand or anything welcoming you. They appeared to have been hosting a local meeting of some sort on our first visit, so perhaps things had been rearranged. Our first visit was late in the evening. I'm not sure of the time, but it was definitely after dark in mid July, so probably around 8:30-9:00. We were the only ones inside and were sat at a picnic-type table inside near the door on the bar side of the restaurant. There were still some folks sitting outside so the servers were walking in and out the door. The mosquitoes were in rare form and completely hounded us for the entire meal. Because we were right near the door, we were the perfect victims! It was annoying and it pretty much ruined our meal. Not necessary the restaurant's fault, but it was a big problem, but wouldn't have been if we were sat elsewhere in the large restaurant. The food was very good, and somewhat gourmet for the atmosphere. I wouldn't necessary come here for a good value on a lobster dinner. It is much more than that. We decided to return on our last night in town, as we had already exhausted the rest of the dining options in town. We headed there early before the mosquitoes came out for the night. We were seated on the front side of the restaurant in a nice section with a great view. The service was a little on the slow side as they were quite busy, it being early evening. The food was terrific and now that we know when not to come, we will definitely return on our future stays in the area.

The contented sole is tough to find, but worth going out of your way to discover. They serve perhaps the best clam chowder I've ever had. I drank oxbow's farmhouse pale ale to wash it down. We sat on the deck over the harbor- a really great scene. For my entrée, I had the catch of the day, which was haddock. It was delicious. The atmosphere was friendly. The crowd seemed like they were mostly summer folk but I could be wrong. Our server was a sweet thing who took care of us enough to make me content. I'll come back here some day.

Beautiful setting right on the water in the harbour. Good seafood choice and quality, and some decent wine and beer selections. Service can be spotty and you'll be seated on plain picnic tables, so don't go if you have different needs. But if good food in a relaxed environment with a beautiful view fits the bill, this is a great choice! We will return.
